Fish Island

Koh Trey

“Koh” is island in Khmer and “Trey” means fish.
So there you have it. (not really, but it works.)

Right across the River from Downtown.

An island surrounded by 2 Rivers and the ocean. Most of the island is 2 meters above sea level, and the highest point, a couple of small mountains are around 80 meters.

The island is mostly used for rice fields, salt fields, and just for living. However, the island is very sparsely populated. it’s roughly in a triangle shape, and 6.5 kilometers long and wide.

One of the quietest places in Kampot. A dirt road, which can be very good or very bad, depending on the time of year,, runs from one side of the island to the other.

The only road (we know of) to get to the island is just across the River from downtown. Take a left at either of the 2 town bridges, and you’ll get to the bridge to Fish Island in a few minutes.

Just over the bridge, is a beautiful Wat (Buddhist Temple) right on one of the Rivers. A small guesthouse, Fish Island Guesthouse is on the other side of the street. Shortly after that is Amber, Kampot’s premier Riverside Resort. Further on, the street turns into a beautiful red dirt road.

In the middle of the island is Fish Island Community Arts Centre. Coffee and snacks, and they empower disadvantaged women to work in a variety of positions.

Towards Coconut Mountain, right on the River, is Lomhae Resort. Tents and bungalows right on the Beach.

At the end of the road, you come to Phnom Doang, Coconut Mountain. A couple hills actually, sticking out of perfectly flat fields. You can go through the mountains, and onto a beautiful beach with mangrove trees, and a view of Phu Quoc Island in Vietnam. A small not really swimming beach with white sand and coconut trees is a few minutes nearby. Easiest to get around here on a motorcycle. Sony’s Restaurant, about 5 minutes before the beach, is the only place nearby to get food and drinks.

Really great scenery on the way out and back. It’s about 20 minutes by road to get from one side of the island to the other.
